Mr Jon Simmons

BSc, MBBS, MRCS(Eng), MSc, FRCS(Plast)
Consultant Hand, Plastic, Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgeon.

Jon was educated at Canford School, Wimbourne, Dorset, before training in medicine at St Bartholomew'sMedical School, London. During his training he studied Orthopaedic Sciences at UCL and Stanmore obtaining a first. He graduated medical school in 1997 (MB BS) and subsequently undertook his surgical training in London to become a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (MRCS). After this he began training in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery in London teaching hospitals.

During his speciality training he spent a year studying healthcare management and health informatics and was awarded a MSc with distinction from City University. He then spent a further year as a project manager for Action on Plastic Surgery and recieved a grant to investigate information delivery. He completed his training in 2011 and was awarded FRCS Plast.

Jon is fellowship trained in upper and lower limb surgery and has extensive experience of cosmetic surgery. On the NHS his passion is trauma and reconstructive surgery, trying to rebuild appearence and function following injury. He was at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust when St Mary's Hospital went live with their Major Trauma Centre and was instrumental in setting up a plastic surgery service on the St Mary's site. Since the trauma centre went live he has managed over 150 open fractures of the upper and lower limb along with countless other soft tissue and boney injuries (jointly managed with orthopaedic colleagues). He has experience of major incidents having been on call for the London bombings, Soho bomb blast and Paddington rail crash.

Jon spends considerable time teaching and training others (list can be found on his CV). One of the most important considerations for him in applying for consultant posts was being somewhere that plastic surgical trainees wanted to go to train. Imperial is just such a place. He believes that by fostering an environment where development is encouraged, patients benefit by being treated by surgeons who are always looking to improve. Through his training and time as a consultant Jon has become increasingly involved in improving patient outcomes. He has achieved this by writing and introducing computer systems that collect reliable data for analysis of outcomes. It is great to see that we are entering an era where surgical outcomes can be better understood to drive improvements in outcome for our patients.

In his spare time Jon enjoys spending time with his wife and 4 children, cycling, sailing and skiing.
